Holidays with your dog

Masuria with your dog: your dog stays free

Glemuria welcomes dogs of any size at no extra charge. Right outside the door there are about 15,000 m² of meadow, surrounded by more than 2,000 hectares of forest with gravel tracks. Czerniki Beach has a dedicated dog area to the right of the jetty, and dogs may enter the Wolf's Lair on a lead and muzzled. Please bring your dog's bowl and bed from home.

Good to know: the grounds are not fenced. There are no stray dogs in the area, but there are roe deer, red deer and elk – so only let your dog off the lead if it reliably comes back when called. In spring and summer, remember tick protection.

Day trips

A 2–3 day plan around the Wolf's Lair

  • Wolf's Lair (Gierłoż), 2 km: best in the morning on foot or by bike, then lunch in Kętrzyn and its Teutonic castle (10 minutes).
  • Mamerki, approx. 30 minutes: the former headquarters of the German Army High Command, with well-preserved bunkers.
  • Święta Lipka, approx. 25 minutes: a baroque pilgrimage church famous for its organ.
  • Reszel, approx. 30 minutes: castle, old town and the bridge over the Sajna river.
  • Giżycko, approx. 30 minutes: Boyen Fortress, the swing bridge and boat trips on the Great Masurian Lakes.

  • Krutynia river, approx. 1 hour: kayaking on one of the most beautiful rivers in Masuria.

Driving times are approximate.

Family roots

Tracing your family in former East Prussia

Many of our guests come not only for the Wolf's Lair: their parents or grandparents were born in former East Prussia, and they want to see their family's places with their own eyes. Glemuria lies right in the heart of this region – Czerniki was once called Schwarzstein and Kętrzyn was Rastenburg – and makes a quiet base for trips to Reszel (Rößel), Święta Lipka (Heiligelinde), Giżycko (Lötzen), Węgorzewo (Angerburg) or Mrągowo (Sensburg).

Our tip: write down both the old German and the current Polish place names before you travel. Your host speaks good English and is happy to help you plan – just send him the places you would like to visit before you arrive.

Autumn and winter

Beautiful out of season, too

Many guests choose autumn and winter on purpose: in October cranes fly over the lake, in winter you can go cross-country skiing across the fields. Underfloor heating keeps the apartments warm, the wood stove crackles in the evening (firewood free), and the access road is tarmac all year round. The Wolf's Lair is open every day of the year.
